The unique making of Shaker Boxes
Shaker Boxes are both unique and distinctive. From their oval shape, seamless construction and veneer-like wood to the fine but practical details of the copper rivets and wooden dowels.
Shaker boxes originated in the early 1700s within the communities of North America and were designed for everyday, practical uses around the home - from dry pantry ingredients and kitchen items to small craft supplies, sewing items and parts for the workshops. Timbo's Shop is now bringing this beautiful craft back to life by handcrafting traditional Oval Shaker Boxes in our Brisbane Workshop.
Our maker, Jude Legg uses traditional bending methods, high-quality timbers (such as American Cherry, Walnut or Rock Maple) and authentic copper rivets sourced from Shaker suppliers in Mount Lebanon USA. One of Jude's favourite timbers to use for these boxes is American Cherry. American Cherry is a prized hardwood that has been hand-selected due to its smooth grain, warm reddish-brown colour and light pink flecks or patina.

During the making process, Jude cuts the wood to size and shapes the box and lid fingers." Then, the wooden bands that form the walls are bathed in hot water until they are pliable enough to bend. Once bent, copper tacks sourced from traditional Shaker suppliers in the USA hold the bands together. After drying, Jude hammers wooden pegs into the lid and base panels of the box that complete the sturdy design of the box.
